I want to get healthcare in Argentina

Understand the healthcare system and options. Public, private or a mix — what the law protects, how to find care and stay covered with or without a DNI.

// what we help answer · las preguntas

The questions we help answer.

The short answer is here. The longer answer (specific to your situation) is what the call and written plan is for.

How does the healthcare system work here? What are my options?

What do the public and private systems each offer? · Can I pay out of pocket instead of a monthly plan? · Which is best for my situation?

There are five ways to get care: the public system (free in an emergency, whoever you are), paying a private doctor directly, travel assistance for big events, a prepaga (a private prepaid health plan with its own network) for predictability, and an obra social (the employment-linked insurer) — which you don't buy, you arrive at by taking a registered job or joining monotributo, the small-taxpayer regime. Almost nobody uses just one.

Can I go to any hospital for urgent care?

In a real emergency, yes: every public hospital's guardia (the 24-hour walk-in emergency service) treats you free, regardless of your immigration status. A private guardia will also see you — but without coverage you'll pay their price, and nothing is chosen in advance.

Do I need travel insurance if I'm visiting?

Nobody checks it at the airport: the 2025 decree that requires health insurance at entry suspended its own requirement until it's regulated, and it hasn't been. But get it anyway — the hospital is where it bites, since scheduled public care now costs non-residents money.

Are dental, medical and vision coverage combined or separate?

Coverage here comes as one medical plan built on a mandatory minimum package, with extras layered on top plan by plan — you don't shop for a separate dental or vision policy first.

How do I get private insurance without a DNI?

Which options are available, and which fits my needs? · What are the steps, and what documents do I need?

The honest answer is that no public source says which documents each prepaga accepts to enroll a foreigner — it isn't hidden, just unpublished — and admission rules are institution-specific and change. What the law does say (Ley 26.682, the prepaga law) is that you can't be refused for your age or a pre-existing condition, which you declare in a sworn statement.

I'm over 55 with a pre-existing condition. What does that do to my options?

Less than you fear, in one direction, and more in the other. By law a prepaga can't refuse you for age or for a condition you declare; the product that closes its door by age is travel insurance — long-stay travel products mostly stop at retirement ages.

What do I do for coverage in the first weeks, and in what order?

Land already covered by travel assistance, pay a private doctor directly for the small stuff, and pick your guardia before the first night-time fever. By phone, the city told us a passport is enough for empadronamiento — registering as a patient — at a CeSAC (a neighborhood health center); we're still testing that end to end.
